Born in 1871 in Scotland James Struthers immigrated from Scotland in 1904 and settled in Gillespie, Macoupin County, Illinois. ![]() He worked at the Superior Coal Mine as part of a Mine Rescue Team and also played in the Gillespie Pipe Band. See also : Gillespie, IL. and Superior Coal Company's First-Aid and Rescue Contests James died in 1957 and was interred in Gillespie City Cemetery. My great grandma Jessie, came over in 1905 from Scotland with her sons John (my grandpa at age 4) and James at age 9. She was a member of the Lady Douglas Lodge #37, Daughters of Scotia, along with her daughter, my Aunt Elizabeth. Jesse died in 1962.
Aunt Elizabeth died in 1988 in Gillespie after working for years as a nurse for Dr. O'Connell.
In 1911 James and Jesse had a son in Gillespie named Douglas who died from what appears to be cholera on the death certificate of 1913 at 2 years, 2 months and 17 days old. |
