COOP June 20, 188513, Saturday, Samuel Coop, aged 50, was killed in the face of his room at Girard coal shaft June 20, 1885, by falling slate. He left a wife and three children. The accident occurred the first thing in the morning. His partner, working with him, cautioned him about the slate being bad, and he tried to take the slate down but failed. he commenced to load coal under it when it fell. He lived two hours after being taken out of the shaft. | |||||||||

Olive, Macoupin County was caught under falling rock and killed instantly. He was working with a timberman and another helper, when the rock showed signs that it was about to fall. the timber man and the other helper ran to a safe place and repeatedly told Dunko to do the same, but he did not heed the warning. Had he moved three feet he would have been clear. His dependants, if any, are unknown and live in Europe. | |||||||||||

ELLEDGE October 8, 198083 , Wednesday, Lee Elledge, of Virden, Mr. Lee Elledge, age 31, married, three dependents, was fatally injured by a roof fall at approximately 12:55 P. M. Wednesday, October 8, 1980, while in the preformance of his duties as Section Foreman at Freeman Unted Coal Mining Corporation, Crown Mine II, Virden, Macoupin County, Illinois. In the 1st West Entrys, in Entry #3, there was a slip going from the last open crosscut across Entry #3. This area was marked out on the Examiner's Book by the pre-shift Mine Examiner. Lee Elledge was standing in Entry #3 when the roof collapsed, resulting in his fatal injuries. His body was recovered at 6:40 P. M. on that same date. |

EVANS September 11, 189511, Wednesday, Daniel Evans, of Virden, aged 22 years, single, occupation miner, was killed at 4 p.m., September 11, 1895 at Mine No. 1 of the Chicago-Virden Coal Company, Virden, Macoupin County, Illinois. The shaft is 322 feet deep, and is equipped with self-dumping cages. He was being hoisted, with several others, when, at about sixty-five feet from the surface, he fell from the cage to the bottom of the shaft. At the surface, 1 1/3 inches of vertical play was observed at the end of the platform of the cage from which he fell. |

FASSERO February 22, 19188b, Friday, John Fassero, laborer, age 22 years, single February 22, 1918, an explosion of 26 kegs of powder, which had been unlawfully let down into the mine and allowed to stand on the switch track while the powder was on, occurred in the Royal mine of C. W. & F. [Chicago, Wilmington & Franklin] Coal Company, Virden, Macoupin County, Illinois, in which four lives were lost. The name, age, occupation, etc., of the men follows: J. Roberts, laborer, age 21 years, single; George Osborne, laborer, age 18 years, single; John Fassero, laborer, age 22 years, single, and Leo Moffit, motorman, age 19 years, married. FATH December 11, 188915, Wednesday, John Fath, a widower aged 64 years, was killed December 11, 1889, at Girard, by being crushed by pit-cars. The driver was coming down a grade with five cars, from which the two rear cars had become unhitched. Fath and partners were working on stoppings on the entry, the driver gave notice to Fath and partners that two cars were coming down the grade behind him. As soon as the driver passed Fath stepped on to the track, his partners called out to him to get out of the way of the two cars, Fath being a little deaf, he must have failed to hear them. | ||||||

FLEMING November 22, 189818, Tuesday Oscar Fleming, miner , aged 58 years was killed November 22, 1898, in the Consolidated Coal Company's No. 10 mine at Mount Olive, Macoupin County, Illinois. He was killed in the face of a room by top coal falling on him. Top coal had been left up for about seven feet back from the face of the room. The coal had been shattered by previous shots. Fleming was standing in a mine car prying off some coal, left by the last shots at the face; when this coal fell it relieved the top coal, when it fell and caught him, pressing his head down on the end of the mine car, killing him instantly. | ||||||

FORSEYTH April 7, 1905,2 Tuesday, John A. Forseyth, aged 26 years, married, was injured by an explosion of powder in the Superior Coal Co.'s mine No. 1, Gillespie [Eagarville], Macoupin County. While in the act charging a shot, a spark from his own or his partne's lamp fell into the powder can, causing the explosion. he died the next day. Inhaling the fumes of the powder caused his death. He leaves a widow and three children. | ||||||

FRENCH July 9, 189717, Saturday John French, a machine helper, aged 31 years, was killed July 9, 1897, in the Hornsby mine. The machine runner was cutting in the corner of a room; a piece of coal had been left up from the last shot; the coal fell. French, it appears, had a pick in his hand; he had jumped back when the coal fell, but falling beneath it, the pick stuck in his forehead and killed him. | ||||||

FRIDNA May 14, 19188b, Tuesday, Pete Fridna, of Virden, trackman, age 40 years, single, was killed in C. W. & F. Coal Company's Royal mine, Virden, Macoupin County. Deceased was laying a switch on Thursday, May 9, when accident occurred. He stated that a driver unhooked his mule but let the empty car continue to run and it struck him on the shoulder. He continued at work all day and worked four hours overtime. The following day he worked at his usual occupation and the next day he and another man loaded 16 large cars of dirt. The verdict of the coroner's jury was that "Deceased came to his death from pneumonia and pleurisy caused by injury to his chest by being struck by an empty car." | ||||||

GENTA January 23, 195659 , Monday, Batista Genta, 64, of Carlinville was killed by a coal fall at Little Dog Mine at Gillespie, Illinois. Mr. Battista Genta, age 64, married, no dependent children, came to his death on January 23, 1956, at 11:40 A. M. at the Little Dog Coal Co. mine, located at Gillespie, Macoupin County, Illinois, where he was employed as a cutting machine operator. The deceased, Mr. Battista Genta, and his buddy had just finished cutting a room when mr. Genta reached over the control lever to release the tail rope on a short-wall cutting machine. A piece of coal weighing about 100 lbs. fell from the face, hitting him on top of the head and jamming the control lever about 3 inches into his right eye socket. He died almost instantly. | |||||

GERLOCK October 6, 189315d, Friday, W. H. Gerlock, of Staunton, fireman, aged 25, a single man, employed at night at No. 6 mine of the Consolidated Coal Company, Staunton, Macoupin County, Illinois, was killed by the explosion of a boiler. On inspection it was found that a sag had formed on the boiler over the furnace. The day fireman when cleaning the fire at 5:30 p. m. had not noticed any sag in the plate. The furnace doors are so low that he could not see the plate unless he stooped lower than usual when firing. A sag forming quickly would likely escape detection. the boiler had a thin incrustation of scale, and had been cleaned eleven days before the explosion. It was inspected July 30, 1893. | |||||

GLOEKNER May 5, 189817, Thursday Paul Gloekner, a laborer, aged 20 years, was killed May 5, 1898, at the Consolidate Coal Co.,'s mine No. 8, at Mount Olive, Macoupin County, Illinois, by a passenger train on the Wabash railroad. He was employed with a tem to pull out out a wire rope to attach to the empty cars in order to pull them to the screens. It appears he had pulled the rope out to the empty cars and had unhitched his team from the rope, when, in turning his team, the horses got on the main track of the Wabash railroad. A train running east struck the horses, throwing them upon the driver, who was instantly killed. | |||||

GOLDMAN October 29, 19178b, Monday, Matt Goldman, of Mt. Olive, miner, age 48 years, married, was killed in Consolidated Coal Company's No. 15 mine. Deceased stepped off the track to let a motor trip pass. The trip had become uncoupled and when he stepped onto the track was run over by the rear cars. It seems that he had failed to notice the absence of the white signal board on that part of the trip which had passed him. He leaves a widow and ten children. | |||||

| HAFFNER November 18, 189616, Wednesday, Samuel Haffner, of Carlinville, aged 50 years, married, leaves a widow and five children, occupation miner, was killed at 4 p. m., November 18, 1896, in room four of the sixth south entry of the west side of the mine of the Carlinville Coal Company, Carlinville, Macoupin County, Illinois. A stratum of clod roof about two feet thick had fallen across the room from a slip about ten feet back from the face. The clod was not sufficiently strong to form a roof above the coal, so it was being taken down as the room advanced. At the tiem of the accident Mr. haffner was over-mining a stnading shot when the clod roof above what he had mined fell, striking him, causing injuries from which he died about an hour later. | |||||

Howerton, age 29, single, came to his death by a roof fall, at approximately 11:10 A.M. on Thursday, July 20, 1978, while in th eperformance of his duties as a Utility Man at Monterey Coal Comapny, Mine #1, Carlinville, Macoupin County, Illinois. Mr. Howerton was in the 6th North off the 1st West in Unit #11, the victim was hanging tubing at the intersection between No. 1 Entry and No. 2 Entry when a large roof fall occurred covering the intersection that the employee was working in. The victim was uncovered and pronounced dead at 1:30 P.M. | |||||

HUBERT September 19, 189818, Monday Fritz Hubert, miner, aged about 50 years, was killed September 19, 1898, in the Consolidated Coal Company's No. 10 mine at Mount Olive, Macoupin County, Illinois. Hubert was riding in the cars to his work in the morning. In passing along the south entry, some top coal had fallen in the entry; the cars run up against the top coal lying on the track. The driver unhooked the mule. Hubert and two other miners got out of the cars and passed over the fallen coal. From some cause Hubert turned back and was in the act of sounding the slate above where the coal had fallen. the slate came away very suddenly and caught him. | |||||

HURD There was another fatal accident in this district during the year [1905]6, but as the person killed was not an employee at the mines it is not included in the list of fatal accidents. This accident occurred November 3. 1905. at mine No. 1 of the Superior Coal Co.. Gillespie [Eagarville], Macoupin County. J. D. Hurd, a hotel man living near Gillespie, went to this mine for some purpose not known. The gates at the mouth of the shaft were necessarily open, and an employee of the mine was clearing away coal that had fallen from the pit cars. Hurd walked by this employee into the shaft, falling to the bottom, a distance of over 300 feet. |
